I've never had a facial.  My facially-addicted mother is staring at me in disbelief over my confession.  (The truth is, if I'm at the salon, I'm usually working.)  Like every mother, finding time for maintenance is a luxury.  My mother cannot believe I wouldn't take advantage of such an unbelievable perk.  Generous team members have offered them before and I've politely declined.  I'm blessed with great skin. 

Then I turned 40.  While blemishes are still rare, my skin started drying up like the crypt keeper.  Fine lines appeared.  My ever-present allergies cause me to pop decongestants like tic tacs.  Further sucking the moisture right out of my skin.  My skincare products changed.  My rituals changed, just to keep up with the moisture my skin demanded.  So when a new Esthetician joined the GS Hair Team and offered me a facial, I took the offer this time. 

Our new Esthetician, Kerry Hessell came from another of Sacramento's finest salons.  From our first contact with Kerry  we were impressed.  She's professional, energetic and completely immersed in our favorite and only skincare line-Dermalogica.  She invited me in for a blissful hour!  I donned a wrap and headband.  Laid down on a warm table and she went to work with a hot towel. 

I took a deep breath.  The light lavender aroma of the facial oil and the hot towel went to work on me.  The aching pain ever-present on my face from swollen sinus cavities started to diminish instantly.  I started to breathe easier right away.  I never even thought of using facials to eleviate sinus pain.  What a great surprise!  Like any great facialist, she quickly altered my experience and added hot towels twice more to her routine before we were done!  

The pre-cleanse Kerry uses is one of my favorite Dermalogica products.  The smell of warm apricot oil envelops you and your face just 'drinks' this stuff in.  The pre-cleanse gently lifts make-up and debris off your face.  As each step progressed, she explained what product she was using on my face and why. 

I emerged from Kerry's room an hour later feeling 10 years younger.  My skin felt cleansed, plumped and moisturized.  That pink glow had returned!  As an added benefit - I could breathe freely!  I felt completely pampered.  Facials have become an integral part of my beauty ritual.  I'm keeping every year I can!

Hair Extensions from the Hair Shop!

We struggle on a daily basis to find superior products at an affordable price.  I am absolutely in love with The Hair Shop Hair Extensions.  Though my formal training in extension installation came through another product line, I found myself struggling with other brands.  Lower quality hair extensions would tend to tangle and frizz on installation.  Which means they tangle and frizz for my clients.  Dumping endless product on poor quality hair just makes the problem more expensive.   At the same time, we  strive to keep our costs low. 

The Hair Shop, a 20-year old company based out of LA, provides hair extensions and tools to such notables in the entertainment industry as NBC, ABC, Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures and Sebastian International.  They use only the youngest and healthiest raw hair to create thier products.  The secret to successful hair extension installationis three parts.  Quality of harvest.  Manufacture or processing of the raw hair.  And of course a skilled professional for installation. 

Lower quality hair extensions harvest the hair by cutting it and letting it fall to the floor-gathering it up later.  This causes the hair  to be gathered with the cuticle lying in different directions.  Causing hair to break more easily and look dull.  The Hair Shop hand-selects each batch of hair.  Then each batch undergoes rigorous quality control - making sure each batches cuticles are aligned.  A process which can only be done by hand.  

Raw hair is chosen from young women in the Ukraine, India and China.  The strongest hair is sometimes dark in color.  Harvested hair must usually be de-pigmented.  A process to remove color.  The Hair Shop executes this process under careful observation to minimize damage to the hair.   This produces incredible quality hair!

I use the one-step process as seen on The Hair Shop website.  It's a simple method using copper links.  I have found it minimizes pulling and tangling of your natural hair, is incredibly strong and long-lasting.  Hair extensions should never be painful.  They should not pinch the scalp.  You may lose a few hairs when your extensions are moved up or removed- that's normal.  Make sure to get references from your stylist.  Satisfied clients are a sure way to tell your stylist know what they are doing!

9 Things Your Hairstylist Won't Tell You

1. The style you want may not work for you.  Heed my advice and I will make you look incredible. When you leave my chair and walk out of here, you represent me. So it's in my best interest for you to look good.  Trust me. 
2. I'll work hard to make you happy and I'll want you to like it. After you leave my salon, I'll worry about what you think. (I work on people, not on cars.) If you feel like calling to tell me how happy you are with my work, you will make me smile.  If you send your friends- I'll love you for life. 
3. Protect your investment.  Grocery store brands are full of detergents that strip the hair and waxes that coat the hair-giving it a 'shiny' appearance.  They really make hair heavy and dull from build-up.  They destroy our color work.  We have excellent and cost effective brands that compete with grocery store brands ounce-for-ounce.  Please spend a little money on the right products.
4. Don't skimp on your hair.  It's not a blouse.  You can't take it off.  
5. If you cheat on us we know it.  I don't even have to touch your hair.  I can see by the way it falls it's a cookie cutter haircut.  It doesn't look the same, it doesn't move the same.  My cut is like a fine garment.  It has been tailored just for you. 
6. Bang trims are free.  Stretch your budget by scheduling a bang trim in-between cuts. 
7. We can pick out box color every time.  It makes us cringe.  Box colors are flat.  Salon colors are more gentle, they are hand-mixed by a trained eye.  I can pick up undertones that you don't see.   It is a well-known secret that we only see ourselves in the mirror in two dimensions.  Stylists see in three dimensions.  
8. Box colors cost you money.  In the grocery store, the picture on the box is not going to be the color on your head.  A hair color formulated by a stylist takes into account your chemistry, your existing color, plus your desired results.  When my clients try box color it often takes several visits over a length of time to correct the damage done. 
9. If economizing, chose a hair color closer to your natural color.  Your grow out will be less apparent and you can stretch a little longer until your next appointment.
